1. Easter Island

Visitors, anthropologists, and archaeologists still visit Easter Island because of its ancient sculptures.

The mysteries of these Moai statues have been mostly unlocked, yet there are still some mysteries for curious visitors to the Chilean archipelago to crack.

Researchers have now answered one of the most pressing questions about the Moai: how the Rapa Nui moved these massive stone statues around.

They found that the sculptures were made with pot bellies so they could be rocked back and forth until they moved into the correct position.

However, the mystery of the Moai has nothing to do with the people who made them and everything to do with the Moai themselves. Researchers have shown that the Rapa Nui have separate genetic ancestry from the rest of the native South American tribes.

Even though Easter Island is in the Pacific, the Rapa Nui people are still far distant from their nearest relatives. Their closest genetic kin is the Pacific Islanders who live near Southeast Asia. Then what is the mystery?

Then, how did they get there?

2. The Island of Socotra

There is a mysterious island in the Indian Ocean, not far from the Somalian coast, that seems as if it may be from another planet.Socotra Island has long been touted as the biblical Garden of Eden.

Multiple plant species found alone on this island can’t be found anyplace else on Earth. The Adenium socotranum seems like Dr. Seuss designed it with its big bulbous trunks and tiny twisted branches.

Magnificent pink flowers blossom on branches that grow from their tops. They seem odd, almost as if they were substantial root vegetables. You could always go for a Dragon’s Blood Tree instead if you’d rather have something more like a natural canopy.

3. The Bermeja Island

From the 15th century onwards, at least according to maps, there existed an island in the Bay of Mexico off the shore of the Yucatan Peninsula. Bermeja Islet is considered Mexico’s Gulf boundary, although 20th-century mapping missions failed to identify it.

Several potential causes for an island to appear on maps for over 400 years before mysteriously disappearing. Most researchers believe the island never existed due to an undiscovered mapping mistake.

The island was said to be the color of strawberry blonde hair, and others believe it genuinely existed but is now submerged.

Evidence for this may be seen on British maps from the 1840s, which show the island gradually submerged. Meanwhile, some people believe that the island’s disappearance and the fact that it was politically significant are more than coincidences.

Since the Gulf of Mexico is one of the most oil-rich places on Earth, some have hypothesized that the Mexican government has only kept the island there to expand its claim strategically.

Many people think the island used to be there, but the U.S. blew it up. Some people believe the island is still there but has been buried because of secret programs.

4. Palmyra Atoll

Palmyra Atoll’s mysterious personality cannot be understated, even though, technically speaking, it is not an island but rather an atoll built of coral. Beautiful Palmyra Island, situated between American Samoa and Hawaii, goes by a few other names.

The Lagoon or Island has long been the focus of superstition and legend despite its beautiful greenery and pristine appearance. Several devastating shipwrecks and mysterious ship disappearances have happened on and around the island.

Island survivors have seen ghosts, sea monsters, and inexplicable lights. Some of the hundreds of thousands of sharks there may crave human flesh.

Another myth suggests that the island might still be hiding Incan treasures. Palmyra, a marine and Pacific Islander mythology has existed for centuries and is the result of these and other events that are too awful to narrate.

5. Vulcan’s Home on the Island

Even if it’s not necessarily an island shrouded in mystery, Vulcan Island in the Philippines is undeniably a stunning spot.

In the north of the Philippine island of Luzon sits Taal Lake and Taal Volcano. This island has the world’s most giant Crater Lake and another island, Vulcan.

Vulcan has one of the Pacific’s most active volcanoes. Since 1991, Vulcan Island has been vibrating and boiling, making it exceedingly dangerous for visitors.

They appear to be ordinary trees from the ground, but their thick, closely spaced branches shoot skyward to form a cap that looks like a mushroom. There are three endemic bird species to Socotra: the Socotra sunbird, the Socotra grosbeak, and the Socotra starling.

About one hundred years ago (a.d.), the island was abandoned by its human inhabitants. Only bats and insects are found on the island. Several ships have gone off the island’s coast, adding to the mystery.
