What is a Faraday Cage?
A Faraday Cage is a conductive box designed to prevent electromagnetic fields from penetrating it (EM or EMF) from the outside. It is a structure built using different non-conducting materials, such as wood, plastic, and brick. This cage’s outer shell should be composed of conductive materials, such as aluminum, wire mesh, metallic sheets, iron, copper, or coils of wire. The exterior coating of a Faraday cage should be conductive on all sides and completely closed from one end to the other to keep the charge or radiation on the outer side of the cage.
Faraday cages are used for several purposes, including protecting electronics from electrostatic discharge and external radio frequency interference. Faraday cages are also known as Faraday shields, RF cages (radio frequency), or EMF cages (electromagnetic force).
Michael Faraday first used his concept of the Faraday cage in 1836. These days, you can hardly go anywhere in the technology world without coming across a Faraday Cage. They are straightforward tools, yet their applications range from air travel security to the protection of national secrets.
In this blog, we’ll explore their applications and uses.
Applications and Uses of Faraday Cage
Faraday cages can be used in a lot of different ways. Most likely, you’ve been in one too without knowing.
Airplanes & Cars
An airplane is the best-known example of a Faraday Cage. The fuselage of an airplane acts as a Faraday Cage for the people inside. When lightning strikes, which happens quite often in the air. The plane’s delicate electronics and valuable passengers are completely unharmed because the plane’s outside is made of aluminum.
Cars are another great example of Faraday cages.
Hospital Labs & MRI Machines
Faraday cages are majorly used in hospital labs, especially in X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans & ultrasound rooms. In these areas, you may have noticed there is always a sign that says, “Turn off your phone,” and you’ll often find that in those parts of the hospital, even the waiting rooms, there is either no mobile signal or the signal keeps disconnecting. MRI scans need strong magnetic fields to create images of the human body for medical purposes. If cell phones were allowed into the room, they can have a major effect on how the images turn out & electromagnetic fields don’t change a patient’s diagnostic image; for this reason, MRI rooms have to be shielded.
Microwave Ovens
Faraday Cages are also used in everyday things like microwave ovens. But, unlike other uses, they are made to work in the opposite direction and keep the microwave radiation inside the oven. Part of the cage can be seen through the clear window of the microwave.
Buildings
As it turns out, many buildings like shopping malls, cinemas, supermarkets, and in-door-themed parks are also Faraday cages by accident. The use of a lot of metal rebar or wire mesh can mess up the mobile phone and wireless internet signals.
IT & Electronics
Faraday cages are often used to keep EMP attacks and lightning strikes from damaging important IT and other electrical equipment.
Military & Government Other Uses
Faraday cages are also used by the military and other high-profile officers.
They are also used to stop people from listening in on conversations. Politicians and people at other high-level meetings often choose to talk about sensitive issues in rooms made with the Faraday cage design.
